Market Row, Brixton

Market Row is one of three listed markets in the Brixton Conservation Area. Built in 1928 the market has a ‘T’ shaped plan and internally is characterised by a strong two storey pilaster framework supporting a central pitched glazed roof.

The new proposals respond to the Market’s need to evolve by improving and extending its current offer by creating a new light filled rooftop space while respecting the primacy of the existing structure, and the cultural memory that it imbues. Care has been taken to minimise the physical impact on the listed structure and to reduce disturbance to the ground floor tenants, allowing them to maintain operations throughout.

At first floor the space is rationalised by removing cellular walls and the existing concrete roof to free up capacity for a new storey comprising a lightweight steel and timber structure.

The new extension is characterised by a clerestory composed of polycarbonate panels. This translucent material has a reflective nature, de-materialising it against the sky, reducing its perceived mass and allowing the existing facade to dominate.

The existing facade along Electric Lane will be repaired and re-decorated – maintaining its identity, characterised by its bay form with elegant terracotta coloured piers and rendered infill panels.

Part of the new proposals include installing a new lift and additional staircases to provide access for all and afford means of escape from the upper levels.
